A horrible smell in my home

For a few weeks, I noticed that I was smelling something awful in my home but couldn’t figure out what the source was.

Eventually, I realized that the smell was worse when I turned on the furnace.

I started using the heat as minimally as possible and became determined to get rid of the wretched smell. It was at a point where I did not want to have anyone come to the house because the smell was so bad. I started trying to get rid of the scent by changing out all of the air filters in my home. Nothing changed. Then I washed my walls, ceiling and floors hoping that the smell was being pulled into my HVAC duct. That didn’t do anything at all. I researched and thought maybe it was the inner workings of the Heating and Air Conditioning that needed cleaning. I hired a guy for Heating and Air Conditioning repair and he did good work. He cleaned, oiled and tightened loose parts. That didn’t do anything for the smell, though. I finally called my Heating and Air Conditioning company and asked them what the deal was. The receptionist was certainly knowledgeable and understanding. She told me that the issue was likely with my ductwork. It turns out that the smell was actually burning hair, which might just be the worst smell ever! Apparently, there was hair and dust built up in the ductwork. It turned out to be an easy fix. An HVAC specialist came to the house and cleaned out the ductwork. The smell was gone from that point on, and it really was worth every penny!
