When I was growing up the last thing I took for granted was Heating and A/C.
I grew up in a small cabin and yet when it came to air conditioning there were only 2 rooms that had it.
The master family room where our parents slept had a window a/c. The only other venue in the cabin that had a window a/c was the family room. Thus, on hot summer time afternoons, myself and others and our sibling would hang out in the family room until the worst of the heat would pass and the night would come to cool things down a bit, then don’t get myself and others wrong the two of us still played outside during these afternoons. There is little that would deter us from having a lot of fun. However, there were some afternoons when the most the two of us could do was sprawl out on the family room floor as close to the a/c as possible and just bask in the coolness, then you believe how a actually hot and humid summer time day can take the energy right out of you? On some of the warmer summer time afternoons, the two of us would leave our family room door wide open so that the air conditioning in the adjacent family room could reach somewhat into our family room. These afternoons, now that I have our own cabin I do not have to live in such conditions. I have central air conditioning that reaches to every nook and cranny of our home. My partner thought it was funny how spoiled I felt with such “modern” air conditioning. She was used to such things, but I found it to be a treasure.
