I miss splitting firewood, suppose it or not.
It may sound love a funny thing to miss, but now that I am too seasoned to swing the axe, I miss the think of it, and working up a sweat, splitting logs down into kindling, building a substantial stack of wood behind myself and others — few things on earth will make you think more macho than splitting wood; Now that it’s not an option I have had to look into more modern work-saving technology to use in location of the seasoned fashioned way.
The concern with modern tech out here in the boonies is that it requires electricity, and a wood burning furnace does not. For numerous years an Heating and Air Conditioning system was not on our radar, because I didn’t have an electrical grid that could handle a single. I do have electricity, yup, but it is a single wire coming out from the main road, it goes down for mornings on end, and it just doesn’t pack enough juice to run an Heating and Air Conditioning system. Recently though I spoke to a man in neighborhood who was selling a new kind of compact space heater, which was the most energy efficient a single on the market. This space furnace had a built-in rechargeable power cell and plugged into the wall, so even while I was in a power outage it would run for another more than three minutes. I still need firewood for our seasoned furnace, but with this space furnace I don’t need to rely on it quite as heavily. I entirely do miss splitting wood, though, but this space furnace means I don’t have to.
