Appearances can be deceiving

I am an insurance agent and two of us work on the weekend.

The first thing we noticed when we opened the office door Saturday morning was that the air conditioner wasn’t working.

The office was hot and stuffy. Living in the south, this wasn’t acceptable. We need air conditioning all year round. We knew we had to get an HVAC technician in to fix it, but, we were only open half a day on Saturdays and were afraid that we could not get one out that quickly. My coworker called around and found an HVAC service company that could get someone out right away. However, when he showed up, we couldn’t believe our eyes. I wasn’t sure that he was fit for the job. At first, we thought he was a customer. He wasn’t in uniform. I guess because he got called in last minute on his day off. He was wearing saggy jeans and a homeboy shirt and looked to be still in high school. He was even chewing gum. We actually thought about calling the HVAC company back and requesting someone else. However, appearances can be deceiving. Although he may have looked a little like a punk, he had excellent manners. And, he had the air conditioner up and running in no time. I learned a lesson about passing judgement that day. It turns out, he was an excellent high school student who took vocational training in high school. After graduation, he apprenticed for a year and was now an HVAC technician, and he was still a kid.
