Fear that A/C will stop working

I have heard that many people in the area where I live have been having issues with their air conditioners lately. This scares me because it is extremely hot and humid where I live and the heat has been extreme lately. Without air conditioning, fans will not be enough to keep my house cool. Even if I close the curtains, get black out shades, and put every fan on in the house, that will not be enough. If my air conditioner stops working, I run the risk of becoming overheated. I could stick my head in the freezer or take a cool shower but I do not think that is a permanent solution. I have also heard that people in my area are having a hard time getting an HVAC technician to come out and check their air conditioners in a timely manner. I have heard that it can take up to three weeks for an HVAC technician to come out. Because it is so hot and humid, I cannot imagine living in my house for three weeks without air conditioning. I do have a fear that my air conditioning will stop working and it will take too long for an HVAC company to come out. Luckily, we rarely have power outages at my house. We are on the same power line as a major hospital, so it is unlikely we will lose power. It is a relief to know that we would at least not lose air conditioning due to loss of power. To prevent our air conditioner from having issues, we change the filters often and use a smart thermostat to control the temperature.
