Frozen evaporator coils

We keep getting different and extreme weather patterns this winter.

  • I live in a climate that is predominantly subtropical, although winters can be quite interesting because the temperature will fluctuate wildly throughout the day and afternoons.

Recently, this caused an issue with my heating and cooling system. My associate and I had a night that saw rapidly changing temperatures drop into the low 50s and I was running the heat that night. However, I observed that rapidly changing temperatures would soar into the low 70s by the time the afternoon arrived! Before I left for work, I set the cooling system to run once a particular temperature was reached. By the time I got home, it was easily moderate in the house and I discovered that the cooling system never seemed to turn on at all! Before long, I realized that the system was frozen up! I particularly did not want to call out a heating and Air Conditioning professional so I did some quick research online. I discovered that in order to thaw out the frozen coils, I needed to turn off the cooling system and run the fan on auto to melt all the ice away. I was hoping this would turn out to be the solution I needed, because if it did not work then that meant that there was some other problem going on besides rapidly changing temperatures the previous night. Thankfully, the ice did melt off the coils and the cooling system was able to function again! I was so delighted that there weren’t any serious issues with my cooling system.
