I’ve had a gym membership for twenty years

I’ve maintained a gym membership at the same facility for over twenty years.

The gym has switched ownership and changed its name several times over the years.

The venue has been remodeled and the fees have more than doubled. I’ve watched members quit and new people sign up. In January and February we typically see a big influx of new people. They are often outfitted in the latest and most expensive fitness attire. They are at the gym to be noticed and brag rather than actually workout. Those members don’t last long. I’ve made friends with many of the regulars who I run into all the time. The gym is my way of keeping myself physically fit. I arrive there every day at the same time and devote a minimum of an hour to my exercise program. I vary between using the treadmills, rowing machines, stationary bikes and ellipticals for cardio. Now and then, I run on the indoor track. I follow-up with some type of weight training. I prefer the machines. Each one specifically targets a different muscle group. It’s easy to adjust the machine to my size and the level of weight I want to use. Occasionally, I lift simple free weights. Over the years, the gym has added an impressive inventory of new and innovative equipment. They have installed heavy bags and speed bags, now include a rock climbing wall and added battle ropes. The newer machines feature touchscreens and wireless connectivity. I also take advantage of a variety of group classes. I’ve tried crossfit, spin, pilates, yoga, boot camp and HIIT. There are so many ways to workout at the gym that my training sessions never get boring. My membership is my way focusing on my health and fitness without distractions.
