Proximity to the boiler is key to classroom heat

One thing they don’t tell you is that when you first get hired as a teacher, the older teachers give you the worst of the worst.

Not only did I get the least desirable classroom, supplies, and chairs, but I got the kids that all the teachers didn’t want.

Cruel to me and those kids right? Anyway, my classroom wasn’t considered a good one because it was at the far end of the school. You had to walk forever to reach it. It also had leaky windows and was far from the school heating system. It meant in the wintertime it was freezing cold in my room. I had to sneak in a space heater my first year. It was so cold. The school boiler system died after that year though. The school ended up replacing it with a new model and putting it on my side of the building. I went from freezing cold all day long in school to being perfectly warm. The heater is on a timed program. The school is cheap and only starts the heater when the students arrive and has it quit an hour before they leave. Since teachers come early and leave later, it meant most rooms were cold all day. The classrooms on the opposite side of the boiler never seemed to get warm. I was suddenly the first room to receive heating and by the time it was cold at the end of the day, I was ready to go home. Suddenly all the teachers wanted to switch rooms with me and offer better supplies for my room.
