The Furnace Wasn’t Warming the Air

Before calling the HVAC company, I decided to replace the air filter.

This was the first year that I didn’t have my HVAC system serviced before I switched from my AC system to my furnace. I typically hire an HVAC professional to come tune my HVAC equipment twice per year: in the spring and the fall. Knowing this, I like to have the tune up done before I switch from the furnace to the AC system and vice versa because it ensures that everything is working properly. The HVAC equipment can sit for several months without being touched and issues can arise that are unexpected, which is why it’s always a good idea to hire an HVAC professional. This year however, the weather took a turn and the temperature dropped significantly overnight. Despite having an existing appointment already scheduled for a week later, I turned off my AC system and turned on my furnace to stay warm. I knew it was unusual for me, but I assumed everything would be fine. When I turned the furnace on, some dust flew out of the air vent. This was normal though because the furnace had been sitting all spring and summer. What wasn’t normal though was the cool air coming from the air vents. The furnace was supposed to heat the air, not cool it. Before calling the HVAC company, I decided to replace the air filter. This was the only thing I felt capable of doing and it seemed to work. Once the new air filter was installed, the air began to feel warm again. I kept my HVAC appointment and made sure that the HVAC professional knew what I had experienced just in case something was wrong that I’d missed.
