Warning sounds from the boiler that should concern you

Similar to most technical appliances, boiler systems comprise moving parts that will inevitably emit sounds.

Your HVAC system is one of the hardest working equipment in your home. Heating and pumping water throughout your house is a complex task. You may detect some audible sounds coming from your boilers. These sounds include a quiet whirring when your boiler pump is circulating water in your home, deep rumbling when your boiler turns on, and occasional quiet clicking when the thermostat sends a signal to your boiler. While some of these sounds are part of your boiler’s normal operations, some sounds may be a clue that your system needs attention. Ignoring them may be hazardous. When your boiler is making a banging noise, it could indicate limescale or sludge build-up in your boiler’s heat exchanger, causing an obstruction of water that is beginning to overheat and steam. This can reduce the lifespan of your boiler. Alternative causes may be a leak in your boiler resulting from corrosion in the pipework. When your boiler gurgles, it indicates trapped air within the boiler. It could also indicate clogging at the base of your boiler. The trapped air may also come with cold patches on your radiator. Another common cause of gurgling is the low water pressure in your boiler. When your boiler is whistling, it could be an indication of kettling, trapped air, or loss of water in your boiler. A squeaking or whistling sound is usually a symptom of a mechanical defect. For instance, pumps that require oiling can create such sounds.
