We picked a terrible time of the year to put an addition on our house

We’ve been trying to put an addition on our house for the past three years but it hasn’t ever seemed to be the right time.

This fall, we ended up with a lot of extra money because my husband got a big bonus check at work. Before we spent it on other things like a new car or a family vacation, we decided to go ahead and put on the addition to the house while we still had all that money. However, we ended up having some issues with our HVAC contractor who was tying the addition into our existing heating and cooling system for us. We couldn’t decide if we wanted to use our existing HVAC system or put in an additional HVAC unit for the addition. If we did use an additional heating and air conditioning system, we would have two different furnaces and two different A/C units for different parts of the house. While I like the idea of zone control heating and cooling, I thought that the cost of this HVAC system would end up being more than if we tied the new ductwork in with our old ductwork. The HVAC contractor explained to us that our old furnace and A/C would have a hard time keeping up with the demand to heat and cool all of the new space that we were building on. He got frustrated with us and left the job one day and he hasn’t been back yet! Now it’s freezing cold outside and we’re having to put space heaters all over the house to stay warm because our HVAC system still isn’t hooked up the way it needs to be.
