What about the furnace?

The last thing anyone ever thinks about in this incredibly hot state is the heating system in their home. Most of the time, all anyone really wants to focus on is the effectiveness of their air conditioning system. Is the ceiling fan in each room set to pull hot air up and away from the ground? Are the ventilation shafts clear of dust and debris? And of course, is the outdoor air conditioning unit running at peak efficiency to keep the house as cool and comfortable as possible? With all of these factors at play, it’s easy to see how many fellow southerners – myself included – lose track of the other side of our home’s temperature controls. I made the same mistake this past winter, as I thought that surely, there’s just no way the winter will be cold enough to justify running the heater! Well, I was mistaken. It was an incredibly cold winter this year, with hard freezes every other week and a constant windchill in the air. It was unreal! We haven’t seen a winter that cold in decades, and needless to say, it caught us all off-guard. After that, I made sure that our heating system was up to par. First, I had to make sure the electric furnace was in working order. Since it broke down in the first week of winter, I knew I had to be sure that it would work and keep working through the harsh weather. Then, I also bought two electric space heaters that I kept in the bedroom and living room. I only ran the space heater while I was in the room, but doing this helped immensely with getting through the cold weather!
