Commercials are great, but one HVAC ad made me think twice about getting a programmable thermostat

This commercial made me wonder about these smart thermostats – are they too sophisticated for the average person to troubleshoot? I don’t have a programmable thermostat in my home, but I worry that if I do replace my current thermostat that I would have to call an HVAC technician when something goes wrong

Commercials are used by manufacturers to advertise their products to the public. There have been some wonderful commercials over the years that will live in my memories forever. I am not a football fan, but I watch the Superbowl every year just to see the commercials, and I am never disappointed because those marketing campaigns are usually phenomenal. A few weeks ago, I saw a commercial for an HVAC company that was funny, and it grabbed my attention. The setting for the commercial was a living room of a home where the husband was sitting on the sofa, and his wife was standing by the programmable thermostat and she was frustrated that she couldn’t get it to work. She asked her husband for some help, but unfortunately, he refused, and nonchalantly replied and stated that fixing the thermostat was above his pay grade. He then instructed her to call the HVAC company to schedule an appointment. He was so unbothered and unphased by her distress. This commercial made me wonder about these smart thermostats – are they too sophisticated for the average person to troubleshoot? I don’t have a programmable thermostat in my home, but I worry that if I do replace my current thermostat that I would have to call an HVAC technician when something goes wrong. Calling an HVAC technician to fix a Smart thermostat would create unnecessary extra costs – I have never scheduled an appointment to fix a thermostat. There are many benefits to having a programmable thermostat, it can conserve energy and save money on my bill, but if I will need to contact an HVAC technician because it malfunctions, I think I will wait a while before I replace my old thermostat.
