The pipes burst from the freezing conditions

My family and I have a cabin by the lake. We use the cabin during the spring, summer, and fall months. It’s too cold during the winter season to use the cabin, so we usually stop going in the middle of October. During our last weekend at camp, we sealed up the cabin type for winter. We don’t run any heat during the winter months, so we keep everything boarded up and secure. We cover the outdoor pipes with tarps and insulation so they don’t freeze. In ten years, we have never experienced a single problem with frozen or broken pipes. This year was different. I decided to go to the cabin early in February. I had the opportunity to go skiing late in the season with some friends and I wanted my snowboard. It was in the cabin from the previous season. When I arrived at the cabin, I was surprised by the sight. The place flooded completely. The pipes burst because there was no heat in the cabin and the floor was covered with water. Some of the water was ice and some of the water had already started to melt. I contacted my wife to tell her about the problems in the cabin and I contacted a plumbing and heating company to help with the busted pipes. I called my friend and told him that I would be unable to go skiing. I had to handle this mess before the problem was much worse. From now on we will probably run some type of heat in the cabin to keep this from occurring again in the future.
