The Right Position

Years ago, I played back-up catcher on a softball team and got called into duty for the championship game when several starters were unable to play.

It was a tight game and in the last inning, the tying run was on third base as the batter hit a deep fly ball. The runner tried to score as I stood at home plate like the Statue of Liberty with my gloved hand held high. I think my eyes were closed as the rocket-like thrown ball smacked into my glove. The momentum spun me around and my glove somehow tagged the runner before he scored. Even the losing team and umpire were laughing but I earned that game ball that l still treasure to this day. I tell people that the only thing I did right was to be in the right position to catch that throw. Everything else was luck. We all have moments of good luck, but when good things happen it is usually due to good planning and the foresight to take corrective actions to prevent things from going wrong. This is especially true with HVAC systems. It does not take a genius to know that to keep an HVAC system running well, a regular cleaning and maintenance service is needed at least twice a year. No deep thoughts are needed to realize that an extended warranty is a wise purchase when the OEM warranty expires. And when it gets time to replace your old HVAC unit, the new unit won’t suddenly appear at your home as that ball did in my glove. You will need to invest some time and effort to be in the right position to catch a great deal when it comes along.
