Furnace on high after freezing rain storm

Last night it was pouring rain really bad, and it was coming down so forcefully that the noise was making a major racket on our roof and I had trouble sleeping because of this.

It also got really cold as well, and caused me to have to crank the furnace way up.

I usually have our heating system set at 75 degrees because it usually does not get genuinely cold this time of the year over here where I live, but however, because of the rain I had to crank the control equipment up to 78 degrees! I am so thankful this doesn’t happen every single day. Because the cost to run a central heating unit is pretty high-priced if it runs all of the time, then where I used to live it was cold for many months of the year, and our energy costs were through the roof! That is one of the reasons I decided to live where I did. Also, when I moved I ended up getting a brand new, never used, modern furnace and a/c unit, the previous central heating and air conditioner unit that was in our house when I moved in was completely broken down and very old. Our house itself was 82 years old. Because of the age of the house, that was a reason I was uneasy about this large rain storm we were having and how hard it was hitting the roof! Thankfully in the end, no permanent damage to the roof was done and I did not have to crank our furnace the rest of the season. It was a single one time thing.
