Helping my brother out with his troubles

My brother Joey has been going through some rough times lately.

He was laid off from his job a couple months ago and his wife has decided to file for divorce after the two of them had some serious arguments over the past few months.

Joey is tough and resilient, but one of his flaws is that he has a very hard time asking for help. As his older brother, I am more than happy to give him assistance, as I know he would do the same for me. After a heated discussion, he finally agreed to my help. He admitted that he was behind on his car payments. I paid the money to ensure that he was current on his car loan and even paid a couple of months in advance to help keep the heat off of him for a while. When I visited him at his house I also found it to be very hot. He admitted that the air conditioner was not working. I paid to have a service technician come out and take a look at the air conditioner. The HVAC technician confirmed our worst fears that the HVAC system was on its way out and not really able to be repaired without costing an exorbitant amount of money that wouldn’t even be worth it in the end. I wanted to help, but I definitely did not have $10,000 lying around to buy a new air conditioner system. My brother did need a solution fast, because it’s quite hot in this area of the country for most of the year. I opted to buy him a window air conditioner unit for his bedroom for the time being. Hopefully, with time we will be able to replace his central heating and air conditioning system. In the interim, I also purchased a few ceiling fans for the other rooms of his house.
