More to Winterizing than heating maintenance

When we moved up here, I’ll admit, I knew nothing about heating a home.

But my wife was from up here so I figured I’d just follow her lead. Of course, she had lived down south since finishing college down there. So when she was living up here, her dad took care of all the HVAC concerns. Unfortunately, we are up here because her dad has passed and her mom is now sick. So it’s not like I could turn to my father in law for guidance on heating a home. A gas furnace was the dragon beast of HVAC equipment in my mind. I didn’t want to get near it. So the only thing I knew to do was what we did back home. That would be to call the HVAC professionals to schedule HVAC maintenance. That’s all I did for the first Winter up here. But thanks to a colleague, I learned that there is a lot more to Winterizing a home than just getting the heating maintenance done on the gas furnace. While an essential part of preparing for Winter, there is much more that goes into prepping a house for these kinds of Winter seasons. Yet, it’s not like it was rocket science once I got into the HVAC company website to learn. I shouldn’t have been intimidated at all by Winter prep at all. Basically, it’s just sealing up the house as tight as possible in order to maximize the gas furnace output and efficiency. And being able to take it step by step with the great directions from the HVAC company website made it just so easy. And wow, we were really warm this past Winter and we saved nearly 20 percent on heating costs.
