air vents work against thermodynamics

A few days ago my friend invited me over to see her new apartment.

I could admit, I was very hesitant to travel across town and see where she was now living. Because she is in the city centre, it makes me rather nervous. I also don’t understand how she can afford such a luxurious place in a desirable neighborhood. Shortly after arriving at her house, it all made sense. It turns out, my friend is not in a super comfortable residence. In fact, the central heating, cooling, and air quality control system leaves a lot to be desired. From the moment that I walked into her place I noticed that the indoor air felt drafty and stagnant at the same time. I mentioned the low indoor air temperature and asked if we could have just the thermostat. She told me that she had already maxed out the heating settings on her central HVAC system. In fact, she told me, she was always uncomfortable in this apartment because of the unmanaged air quality and unpredictable air temperature. Apparently, no matter what she did it felt like she was relying on natural ventilation rather than her expensive HVAC system. She was paying a ton and energy bills and it was not paying off in air temperature management. That’s when I began to look around at her heating, cooling, and air quality control infrastructure. Her air vents were all installed at the ceiling level. This meant, all of her expensive heated air floated upwards, and we never enjoyed any of it. No wonder she could afford this place, it was built by idiots.
