HVAC ads are a stepping stone to making movies

It started with one commercial, following an HVAC tech through his normal routine on a typical house call.

As a kid, my dream was to make horror movies. I had a little hand held video camera, and me and all of my friends used to spend all our free time making movies. They were terrible, but over time they got less terrible, and I thought I was pretty good at directing. I stuck with it through the years, for better or worse, when all my other friends lost interest. I am still making movies and directing, although not exactly in the way I dreamed. For now I am making TV commercials, and working on a campaign for a regional HVAC company. It started with one commercial, following an HVAC tech through his normal routine on a typical house call. Of course I jazzed it up with fancy editing and cool music, and suddenly the HVAC repair routine seemed a lot more exciting. The owners of the HVAC company liked what I did, and booked me to make a series of commercials to use for all of their different store fronts. TV spots about air conditioners are still a far cry from making horror films, but at least I can say I am a professional director now! It turns out that film directors are a tiny fragment of the industry, and these HVAC commercials might be enough to get me into the Directors Guild of America! After I have that in my pocket I can think about leaving a life of air conditioning ads behind, and finally move out to Hollywood. It’s a big step, but I hope to make it one day.
