I honestly thought that I knew a lot about HVAC units, but I knew nothing.
When I decided to become an HVAC technician, I was pretty cocky about my skills as an HVAC technician.
I was a little older than the average person that wants to become an HVAC technician because I had tried a few different careers before. I had lost interest in my old jobs, and this time, I wanted to do something that I figured would be easy. For me, I figured that becoming an HVAC technician would be much easier. I have had some experience fixing HVAC units in the past. My dad wasn’t an HVAC technician, but he did fix all of the HVAC units in our house, and he taught me some of what he knew while I was helping him fix the HVAC units. Some of the memories were a bit foggy, but I figured that they would come back to me while I was fixing HVAC units. Furthermore, I had been watching videos on HVAC units and refreshing my memory before I started the job. When I talked to the owner of the HVAC company, I told him that I had a ton of experience working on HVAC units, and I figured that I would excel pretty quickly through the training. He decided to let me fix a broken furnace by myself while he was watching to figure out what I knew. At that moment, I realized that I was an idiot. I didn’t have the slightest clue what was wrong with the furnace. I struggled for a while while the HVAC technician knew I was lying. Eventually, I confessed. After years of training, I look back and can’t believe how arrogant I was.
