Growing up I lived in a small house that stayed hot all year long. In the winter my mom would crank up the heat and the rest of us would sweat while she snuggled up in her blankets. The summer was even worse. We only had one window unit and it was in the back of the house in the kitchen. With seven up us sitting in the small living room, to say it was uncomfortable would be an understatement. We would beg our mom to let us get a second unit or bring it into the living room but she would never give in. One time my brother brought home a fan and put it in the hallway so the air from the air conditioner blew directly into the living room. We were all thrilled and comfortable. We were so comfortable we all fell asleep. My mom came home later that night and threw a fit about the fan. We somehow survived, but I knew I would have a house that was cool and comfortable. I know have a very big house and while I was worried that it would be hard to cool it affordably, my HVAC system works wonders. I had it installed as soon as I bought the home and it works as both a heating and cooling unit. My home is always cool and my siblings come over in the summer for parties so we can talk about how hot it was in our childhood home. Of course, I still use the heater in the winter, but I keep it turned down on a lower setting.
