The new HOA president is giving me a hard time

He keeps sending us nasty letters in the mail and he is threatening to replace our fence at twice the cost

My wife and I were one of the first people to buy a house in this development. Now there are more than 100 homes in the tiny community. When my wife and I bought our home, the HOA didn’t exist. We knew there would be some rules and regulations and we even received a copy of the community bylaws.Over the past year, a president has been elected for the homeowners association and some things have changed drastically. For instance, there is a new rule that all of the fencing around our property must be made of vinyl and white. When my wife and I purchased our home, we knew that the property would need vinyl fencing, but there was no color restriction. At that time, we purchased tan colored vinyl fencing that perfectly matched the exterior color of our home. We expected to be grandfathered in when the new rules were set in place, but the president of the HOA has been a real pain. Since we live near the front of the property, the HOA president claims our different color is an eyesore. He keeps sending us nasty letters in the mail and he is threatening to replace our fence at twice the cost. My wife and I are tired of receiving nasty letters in the mail, and we even discussed retaining a lawyer to help fight the changes. I’m not sure if we have any room to fight the HOA, but I’m not going to spend five thousand dollars to replace the fence unless a judge forces me to comply.
